1968 NBA Draft - #1 Pick Elvin Hayes
Answer from previous Post:
Elvin Hayes ! Selected number #1 overall in the 1968 NBA Draft by the then San Diego Rockets. Even though number 2 pick Wes Unseld took home MVP honors in their rookie year, Elvin would lead the NBA in scoring that season. After 3 pretty damn good years in Sand Diego, The Big E’ would make the move to Houston along side the rockets franchise in 1971. That was E’s home though, as he had a pretty epic career playing for the Houston Cougars. You gotta watch his battles with UCLA & Lew Alcindor. ‘The Game of the Century’ January 20th 1968. The first NCAA regular season game nationally televised. Peep it. Found a pretty good Documentary on the UOY tube.
Anyways, Elvin got blasted from Houston to Baltimore in 1972 due to some differences with head coach, Tex Winter.
Teaming up with Wes was a good call though. The Bullets led by the dynamic duo, made 3 finals appearances in the mid to late 70’s, winning it all in 1978. Wes took home Finals MVP. Both players retired in the early 80’s and were named to the Hall of Fame not long after. Thanks for looking ..
